Roger Moore earned international fame playing British secret agent James Bond in seven James Bond movies, died of cancer on Tuesday at the age of 89, his family said.
“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer,” Moore’s children, Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian, said in a statement on Twitter. “The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone.”
The son of a London policeman, Roger Moore once said that the upper-class image he portrayed both on and off the screen was a carefully nurtured cover for his shyness and timidity. Moore replaced Sean Connery as 007 (ie Double O Seven) and was the third actor to take on the role. He starred in seven Bond movies including “The Man with the Golden Gun”, “The Spy who Loved Me”, “Moonraker” and “Octopussy”.
Heavy tax imposed on the rich and wealthy living in Britain by the British government, which encourages talent to flee abroad, because of taxation, made Roger Moore angry, so he moved to the United States to become a tax exile. Reuters reports that after handing over the role of Bond to Timothy Dalton, Moore went into semi-retirement, living a millionaire’s life and travelling between his homes in Los Angeles, Switzerland and the south of France.
Roger Moore, the British actor best known for playing James Bond in the 1970s and 80s was until his death a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Roger Moore is survived by his 4th wife, Scandinavian socialite Kristina “Kiki” Tholstrup, whom he married in 2002, and by his three children from an earlier marriage, Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian. A private funeral for Moore will be held in Monaco, his children said in their statement.

He is also known for playing Simon Templar in the television series The Saint between 1962 and 1969. Sir Roger George Moore KBE (October 14 1927 – 23, 2017) died on Tuesday, May 23. He was 89.
